Classroom Instruction

CNA training typically begins with classroom learning, covering the theoretical foundations of patient care. You’ll learn about:

  • Basic Nursing Skills: How to take vital signs like blood pressure and temperature, and how to recognize changes in a patient’s condition.

  • Personal Care Techniques: Methods for assisting with bathing, dressing, and feeding, while ensuring patient dignity.

  • Infection Control: Best practices for preventing the spread of infections, such as proper handwashing and using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Hands-On Clinical Training

After classroom sessions, you’ll participate in clinical training in a real healthcare setting, such as a nursing home. This practical experience includes:

  • Working with Patients: Applying classroom skills under supervision, like helping patients with mobility or personal care.

  • Supervised Learning: A licensed nurse will guide you, ensuring you perform tasks safely and correctly.

  • Documentation Practice: Learning to record patient information accurately, a key part of a CNA’s role.

Time Commitment

In Rhode Island, CNA training programs must include at least 120 hours of instruction, with a minimum of 40 hours in a clinical setting. Programs often span several weeks, with a mix of daytime or evening classes to accommodate different schedules.

Challenges and Rewards

CNA training can be demanding, requiring focus and physical stamina, but it’s also deeply rewarding. You’ll gain the skills and confidence to make a difference in patients’ lives, setting the foundation for a fulfilling career.
