Effective time management is a critical skill for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), who often juggle multiple tasks in fast-paced healthcare settings. At In Home WellCare Academy, we’re passionate about helping future CNAs prepare for success, even as we work toward becoming a DOH-approved training program in Rhode Island. Here are some tips to help you manage your time effectively as you prepare for this rewarding career.
Please note: We are not yet approved by the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) and cannot accept student applications at this time. Stay tuned for updates on our progress.
Prioritize Your Tasks

CNAs handle a variety of responsibilities, from assisting patients with daily care to documenting vital signs. Start practicing now by:
Listing Daily Goals: Write down key tasks you want to accomplish each day, such as studying CNA concepts or practicing skills like taking a pulse.
Focusing on High-Priority Items: Tackle the most important tasks first, like reviewing infection control protocols, before moving to less urgent ones.
Use a Schedule
A structured schedule can help you stay organized:
Set Study Blocks: Dedicate specific times each day to learning CNA-related topics, such as 30 minutes to read about patient safety.
Include Breaks: Short breaks can prevent burnout—try the Pomodoro technique, working for 25 minutes and then taking a 5-minute break.
Practice Multitasking Safely
CNAs often need to handle multiple patients’ needs at once. You can prepare by:
Simulating Scenarios: Practice doing two tasks at once, like listening to a healthcare podcast while organizing your study notes, to build efficiency.
Staying Focused: Always prioritize patient safety—multitasking should never compromise the quality of care you provide.
Prepare for the Unexpected
Healthcare settings can be unpredictable. Build flexibility into your routine by leaving buffer time for unexpected delays, such as extra time for reviewing a challenging topic like dementia care.
