Building Confidence for Clinical Training

Clinical training is a vital part of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), offering hands-on experience in real healthcare settings. At In Home WellCare Academy, we’re committed to supporting future CNAs, even as we work toward becoming a DOH-approved training program in Rhode Island. Here’s how you can build confidence for clinical training while we await approval.

Please note: We are not yet approved by the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) and cannot accept student applications at this time. Stay tuned for updates on our progress.

Familiarize Yourself with Skills

Clin

ree

ical training involves applying skills like taking vital signs and assisting with personal care. Boost your confidence by:

  • Practicing Basics: Use a friend or family member to practice measuring pulse or temperature, ensuring you’re comfortable with the process.

  • Reviewing Protocols: Study proper techniques, such as handwashing (20-40 seconds, all surfaces) and using gloves, to feel prepared.

Learn About the Environment

Clinical training often takes place in nursing homes or hospitals, which can feel intimidating at first. Prepare by:

  • Researching Settings: Look up what a typical day in a nursing home is like, focusing on the role of CNAs in patient care.

  • Visualizing Scenarios: Imagine yourself helping a patient transfer from bed to chair, practicing the steps mentally to build familiarity.

Develop a Growth Mindset

Feeling nervous is normal, but a positive mindset can help:

  • Embrace Mistakes: View errors as learning opportunities—during training, instructors are there to guide you.

  • Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to seek clarification on tasks like documenting patient care, which builds understanding and confidence.

Build Physical and Emotional Stamina

Clinical training can be demanding. Practice standing for longer periods to prepare for shifts, and work on stress management techniques, like deep breathing, to stay calm under pressure.
